Type 1
The Principled Reformer

Type 1s are people who are conscientious, sensible, ethical, responsible, idealistic, serious, self-disciplined, orderly, and feel personally obligated to improve themselves and their world.

What drives a Type 1 to think, feel, and behave in particular ways?

Core Fear:

  • Being wrong, bad, evil, inappropriate, unredeemable, or corruptible.

Core Desire:

  • Having integrity, being good, balanced, accurate, virtuous, and right.

Core Weakness:

  • Resentment—repressing anger that leads to continual frustration and dissatisfaction with themselves, others, and the world for not being perfect.

Core Longing (message they long to hear):

  • “You are good.”

Type 1
At Their Best & At Their Worst

When we know, trust, and believe we are Christ's beloved child, we will live more freely in his grace at the healthier levels. When we believe we are on our own, we move down the levels of development.

Healthy 1s
Healthy 1s live their life committed to serving the world and others with patience and integrity. Instead of just focusing on how they are flawed human beings, they fully know, believe, and trust that Christ not only redeemed them from their imperfections but that he gave them his righteousness. This brings them freedom and compassion since they no longer have to strive for perfection in order to be loved and okay.

1s on Auto-Pilot
Average 1s’ focus of attention is seeing errors and imperfections, so they can reform and bring about improvements. They have a very loud inner critic. It is like having a judge and jury constantly pointing out their mistakes. Their inner critic has them on a constant pursuit of perfecting themselves, others, and the world.

Unhealthy 1s
Unhealthy 1s become fixated on the smallest imperfections in themselves, others and in the world. This then causes them to be obsessed with micromanaging and asserting their control to bring relief to the tyranny of their inner critic.

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram (Ennea=9, Gram=Diagram) is simply a map for self-discovery and personal growth. The diagram describes the 9 basic personality types based upon their unique ways of relating to the world.

The Enneagram accurately and clearly describes why you think, feel and behave in particular ways based upon your core fears and core desires.

The power of the Enneagram is in its ability to harness and transform self-defeating behaviors into life-enhancing personal empowerment. The gift of the Enneagram is that through self-discovery, one can create and sustain meaningful and lasting relationships with others, God and themselves.
