Type 5
The Analytical Investigator

Type 5 is a person who pulls back from the world and others to observe and prefers to live in their mind. They may be wise, visionary, and knowledgeable; or abstract, stingy, eccentric, and intellectually arrogant.

What drives a Type 5 to think, feel, and behave in particular ways?

Core Fear:

  • Being annihilated, invaded, or not existing; being thought incapable or ignorant; having obligations placed upon them or their energy depleted.

Core Desire:

  • Being capable and competent.

Core Weakness:

  • Avarice—feeling that they lack inner resources and that too much interaction with others will lead to catastrophic depletion; withholding themselves from contact with the world; holding onto their resources and minimizing their needs.

Core Longing (message they long to hear):

  • “Your needs are not a problem.”

Type 5s
At Their Best & At Their Worst

When we know, trust, and believe we are Christ's beloved child, we will live more freely in his grace at the healthier levels. When we believe we are on our own, we move down the levels of development.

Healthy 5s
Healthy 5s’ main gifts are having tremendous insights and understanding. They have the ability to observe and see things that most people cannot or do not notice. When they use these gifts with an area of expertise, they can bring about great innovation and radical change that will benefit the world.

5s on Auto-Pilot
When 5s begin to forget that they are Christ’s beloved child (completely taken care of and given abundant resources), they begin to move into the average levels of development. Because the 5 has begun to forget that Christ will supply all their needs, they believe they cannot share their needs with others for fear of rejection or being overwhelmed by interpersonal connection.

Unhealthy 5s
A 5's predominant focus at this level revolves around withdrawing, isolating and keeping their resources to themselves. They have forgotten that Christ will provide them with new resources when they give theirs away to others. Their minds start to veer off and become frightened by their own deep, haunting, and conspiratorial thinking. At this level, they fear that others are planning to harm them. So before others can harm them, they begin to plan ways to harm others..

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram (Ennea=9, Gram=Diagram) is simply a map for self-discovery and personal growth. The diagram describes the 9 basic personality types based upon their unique ways of relating to the world.

The Enneagram accurately and clearly describes why you think, feel and behave in particular ways based upon your core fears and core desires.

The power of the Enneagram is in its ability to harness and transform self-defeating behaviors into life-enhancing personal empowerment. The gift of the Enneagram is that through self-discovery, one can create and sustain meaningful and lasting relationships with others, God and themselves.
