Type 3
The Admirable Achiever

Type 3s are people who measure themselves by external achievement and the roles that they play. They may be goal-oriented, accomplished, and excel at what they do, or they can be embellish the truth, be overly competitive, and focused only on their own accomplishments.

What drives a Type 3 to think, feel, and behave in particular ways?

Core Fear:

  • Being exposed as or thought incompetent, inefficient, or worthless; failing to be or appear successful.

Core Desire:

  • Having high status and respect, being admired, successful, and valuable.

Core Weakness:

  • Deceit—deceiving themselves into believing that they are only the image they present to others; embellishing the truth by putting on a polished persona for everyone (including themselves) to see and admire.

Core Longing (message they long to hear):

  • You are loved for simply being you."

Type 3
At Their Best & At Their Worst

When we know, trust, and believe we are Christ's beloved child, we will live more freely in his grace at the healthier levels. When we believe we are on our own, we move down the levels of development.

Healthy 3s
Healthy 3s are no longer needing the constant applause and admiration of others since they know that they are loved for simply being themselves without needing to perform. They are still incredibly talented and good at setting goals, solving problems, and being efficient and productive, but they are now doing this on behalf of others and not simply for their own gain. Not only do they no longer need to win people over, but they help others become the best versions of themselves. Healthy 3s know, believe, and trust that their worth comes from being Christ’s beloved child and not in their ability to create a successful image or persona.

3s on Auto-Pilot
When 3s begin to forget that they are Christ’s beloved child (valued, loved, significant and of great worth), they begin to move into the average levels of development. They begin to believe that they must earn the love and admiration they are starving for by becoming the most successful, admired, and respected individual. In order to accomplish this, they shift gears and go into overdrive by becoming extremely focused on being the best in every category, such as work, health, family, image, and professional status.

Unhealthy 3s
At this level, they believe their whole worth hinges on their accomplishments, successes, and other people’s opinions of them. It is no longer based on who they really are in Christ and their status in him. Because they have forgotten their true identity, they fabricate stories about themselves and their accomplishments in order to gain admiration and love from others. Unhealthy 3s are unable to admit when they are wrong or reveal anything that might diminish their image.

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram (Ennea=9, Gram=Diagram) is simply a map for self-discovery and personal growth. The diagram describes the 9 basic personality types based upon their unique ways of relating to the world.

The Enneagram accurately and clearly describes why you think, feel and behave in particular ways based upon your core fears and core desires.

The power of the Enneagram is in its ability to harness and transform self-defeating behaviors into life-enhancing personal empowerment. The gift of the Enneagram is that through self-discovery, one can create and sustain meaningful and lasting relationships with others, God and themselves.
