Enneagram Type Seven
The Entertaining Optimist

Type Sevens love to plan and anticipate positive future events. They enjoy having variety and multiple choices to choose from. They do not want to be limited, restricted, or bored. They may be well-rounded, affirming, and generous, or at their worst they can be self-focused, an escapist, and have an insatiable appetite for excitement.

What drives a Type Seven to think, feel, and behave in particular ways?

Core Fear:

  • Being deprived, trapped in emotional pain, limited, or bored; missing out on something fun.

Core Desire:

  • Being happy, fully satisfied, and content.

Core Weakness:

  • Gluttony—feeling a great emptiness inside and having an insatiable desire to “fill themselves up” with experiences and stimulation in hopes of feeling completely satisfied and content.

Core Longing (message they long to hear):

  • “You will be taken care of.”

Type Sevens At Their Best and At Their Worst

When we know, trust, and believe we are Christ's beloved child, we will live more freely in his grace at the healthier levels. When we believe we are on our own, we move down the levels of development.

Healthy Seven
Healthy Sevens know that the joy and satisfaction they long for cannot come from the exciting experiences and constant stimulation they try to place their hope into, but instead it comes from being in the presence of their loving Heavenly Father who fills them up with real radiant joy. They see that being Christ’s beloved child means that they have everything they need and desire to bring them the lasting satisfaction and happiness their heart is craving.

Sevens on Auto-Pilot
When Sevens begin to forget that they are Christ’s beloved child, they begin to move into the average levels of development and can no longer tolerate any pain, sadness or disappointment. No longer experiencing the deep satisfaction in Christ, they think they have to create new and exciting experiences to avoid feeling any discomfort.

Unhealthy Sevens
Their whole focus at this level is to escape anything that is causing them pain or boredom. They cannot tolerate being restricted or having limits placed on them, so they find ways to escape and find pleasure. They take more risks, are reckless, and are more prone to addictions.

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram (Ennea=9, Gram=Diagram) is simply a map for self-discovery and personal growth. The diagram describes the 9 basic personality types based upon their unique ways of relating to the world.

The Enneagram accurately and clearly describes why you think, feel and behave in particular ways based upon your core fears and core desires.

The power of the Enneagram is in its ability to harness and transform self-defeating behaviors into life-enhancing personal empowerment. The gift of the Enneagram is that through self-discovery, one can create and sustain meaningful and lasting relationships with others, God and themselves.
